NTRO's capabilities are broad, and we are often approached by those outside the direct realm of the transport industry looking for assistance we can provide.
NTRO's sustainability and materials performance team was approached by water companies seeking technical advisory for:
- low carbon concrete mix design approvals
- high recycled content asphalt mix design approvals
- the potential repurposing of different by-products generated from their activities into their infrastructure.
- any additional opportunities for decarbonisation of their infrastructure.
NTRO's sustainability and materials performance team members Dr James Grenfell, Dr Javad Yaghoubi and Youli Lin hosted the visitors from Barwon Water, Yarra Valley Water, and Melbourne Water.
Dr Grenfell from NTRO kicked off the session with an overview of NTRO's capabilities, followed by a tour of our materials science laboratories.
After the laboratory tour, a more detailed discussion took place.
James Grenfell presented multiple case studies of past projects NTRO has delivered, as well as the services we offer.
A key area of the discussion was decarbonisation of their infrastructure through their construction and maintenance activities. This focused on low carbon and high supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) concrete and asphalt containing recycled materials.
Another topic of interest was some of the by-products the water companies generate and what opportunities there are for repurposing them.
