Intelligent Safe Surface Assessment Vehicle

iSSAVE

The first of its kind.

The Intelligent Safe Surface Assessment Vehicles (iSSAVE) is a large rigid truck equipped with two smaller test wheels on either side of the vehicle which are slightly offset to the direction of travel. Water from a large tank is sprayed onto the road surface in front of the test wheels at a given rate whilst the truck travels at a constant speed so that it can measure surface friction. iSSAVE vehicles are used predominantly for construction projects and surveys for toll road operators and state road authorities. iSSAVE vehicles can also collect roughness, texture and rutting data and digital imagery for visual rating.

Skid resistance is critical.

Think of road safety as a puzzle, where you can only see the whole picture when all the pieces are in place. Roughness, rutting, skid resistance, etc.: they’re all pieces that provide information on specific aspects of the road network but it’s only when you combine them altogether that the true picture of the safety of the road network can be seen. This is what the iSSAVe was designed to do.
