The Intelligent Safe Surface Assessment Vehicle (iSSAVE) measures how road surfaces perform in wet conditions, capturing skid resistance and friction where it matters most - braking, turning and sudden stops. Identify and prioritise sharp curves, pedestrian crossings, and intersections before incidents happen.
The iSSAVE is a large rigid truck equipped with dual test wheels positioned slightly offset to the direction of travel. Water is applied directly to the road surface ahead of the test wheels at a consistent rate while the vehicle travels at a constant speed. This allows the system to accurately measure skid resistance in wet conditions, replicating real-world scenarios where safety risk is highest. In addition to skid resistance, the iSSAVE captures roughness, texture, rutting and high-resolution imagery in a single pass.
