NTRO’s Safe System Assessment Framework 201 workshop develops the practical skills to assess how closely a road or design aligns with Safe System objectives, identify fatal and serious injury risks and recommend changes that improve safety outcomes.
Building on a foundation in the Safe System approach, the workshop explains when to undertake a Safe System Assessment, who should participate and how the assessment complements Road Safety Audits and other road-safety tools. You will examine risk through three connected factors: exposure, crash likelihood and crash severity. Explore how road layout, operating speed, road users and vehicle mix influence these factors, then consider treatments through the Safe System hierarchy of controls.

Worked examples show how assessment results can compare design options and expose the strengths and weaknesses within each option. Rather than relying only on a total score, you will learn to examine individual crash risks and identify targeted improvements. The workshop then moves from theory to application. A practical field exercise challenges you to observe a real road environment, assess its risks and apply the framework under expert guidance.
