NTRO congratulates Transport for NSW on releasing AusRAP Star Rating results for 35,000+ km of roads, advancing road safety transparency nationwide.

The National Transport Research Organisation (NTRO)congratulates Transport for NSW (TfNSW) for their leadership in publicly releasing AusRAP Star Rating results for over 35,000 km of important state and regional roads.  This work is the culmination of a collaborative effort between TfNSW and NTRO and marks a significant milestone in advancing road safety transparency and supporting an evidence-based investment in safer road infrastructure.

The team at NTRO has been working with TfNSW for over 10years to survey, collate, and code AusRAP Star Rating Scores, and for over 40%of the State Highway NTRO has provided updated Star Rating assessments where investment has occurred, providing TfNSW with insight to how upgrades have made a difference to reducing road safety risk to local communities, holiday makers, and interstate travellers.” said David McTiernan, NTRO’s National Leader Transport Safety.

AusRAP is the Australian Road Assessment Program and applies the internationally recognised iRAP methodology to assess road safety risk, providing Star Ratings that clearly communicate the level of safety offered byroads – from 1 star (least safe) to 5 stars (safest).  NTRO, iRAP’s Centre of Excellence in Australia, is proud to have partnered with agencies across the country to deliver independent, high-quality AusRAP assessments.

Our accredited team, including some of the nation’s leading road safety professionals, has supported the coding, analysis, and reporting of almost 150,000 km of road infrastructure across Australia and is helping transport agencies to identify high-risk locations and target investments where they will have the greatest impact.

“The release of Star Ratings empowers communities, policymakers, and road managers to better understand road risk and prioritise improvements that will save lives and reduce serious injuries.” said Emily McLean, NTRO Leader Infrastructure Safety and AusRAP leader.

This collective effort directly supports the Austroads AusRAP Strategy, which commits to publishing Star Rating results for all major arterial roads nationally by 2025. The plan sets an ambitious target: by 2030,at least 80% of travel should occur on roads rated 3 stars or better, as part of Australia’s vision for zero deaths and serious injuries on our roads by2050.

“As iRAP’s Centre of Excellence in Australia, NTRO is committed to the delivery of world-class infrastructure risk assessments and supporting our partners in achieving national road safety goals. The public release of Star Ratings is a vital step towards a safer road network for all Australians, and Transport for NSW has taken a lead in making these results available to the public.” said Emily McLean, NTRO Leader Infrastructure Safety.

NTRO remains dedicated to supporting agencies and local governments nationwide with end-to-end road safety risk assessment solutions, training, and technical expertise. We encourage all road managers to leverage AusRAP assessments and join us in building a safer, more resilient transport network.
