Long-term monitoring shows how crumb rubber asphalt supports sustainable roads

Five years of NTRO monitoring confirms crumb rubber asphalt performance, supporting circular economy outcomes for local councils.

NTRO has completed five years of monitoring on a Light Traffic Crumb Rubber Asphalt (LTCRA) demonstration trial constructed by the City of Greater Dandenong in partnership with Tyre Stewardship Australia. Delivered on Church Road in Keysborough in 2021, the trial applied the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning’s Section 422 specification and was assessed alongside a control site to evaluate long-term performance.

Using NTRO’s infrastructure measurement fleet, the pavement was monitored for roughness, rutting, texture, cracking and structural strength over the 2021–2025 period. The results show the trial pavement has remained in good condition with no notable defects or failures, performing as well as, and in some cases better than, the control section. The findings provide local councils with increased confidence in specifying crumb rubber asphalt, supporting circular economy outcomes while maintaining pavement performance.

The full case study outlines the monitoring methodology, results and key learnings for local government and industry.
