From concept to industry standard, PORTABOOM® has reshaped temporary traffic management across Australia. PORTABOOM® developed by Traffic & Access Solutions, has not only improved work zone safety by removing people from live lanes, but now stands certified by NTRO TIPES through to 2028 — a testament to the power of innovation, safety, and commitment to the Traffic Management Industry

Innovation in Traffic Control
PORTABOOM® began in the mid-2010s as the breakthrough product and alternative to traditional ‘STOP/SLOW bat’ operations in temporary traffic control. Its standout feature — remote-controlled Traffic Control operations —allowed traffic controllers to manage vehicle flow from a safe zone, significantly reducing exposure to live traffic. This simple yet powerful innovation introduced a physical, highly visible barrier that ensured motorists came to a complete stop, dramatically improving on-site safety. PORTABOOM® is now a familiar and trusted sight on Australian roads.
A Decade of Certification Excellence
In July 2016, Traffic & Access Solutions commenced their journey with NTRO’s TIPES certification program — a partnership that has continued through successful renewals in 2019, 2022, and most recently in July 2025. With certification now extended through to 2028, this decade-long commitment reflects the company’s dedication to quality, innovation, and regulatory alignment.
“The evaluation process helped refine our product messaging and sharpen our broader approach,” says Fabian Diaz, Director of Traffic & Access Solutions. “TIPES’ detailed assessments and feedback mechanisms ensured PORTABOOM® consistently met evolving industry expectations. NTRO Certification isn’t just a checkbox—it influenced our product development and industry positioning.”
Paul Hillier of NTRO Certification has witnessed the journey first hand. “Fabian and the team have been model proponents throughout – thoughtful and responsive. I recall their original submission – well marshalled and clearly set out the technical claims for the product, and the evidence that they were relying upon to support those claims. This is always indicative of a proponent that has an attention for detail, and a very strong understanding of their product - and it really supports the work of the Product Evaluation Panel.”
Building Market Success
The TIPES certification process played a pivotal role in helping Traffic &Access Solutions effectively communicate the value and functionality of PORTABOOM® to a broad range of stakeholders — from infrastructure and road maintenance clients to traffic management designers, project managers, and traffic controllers in the field enabling product adoption across the industry. The independent, technical endorsement helped translate innovation into credibility, enabling product adoption across the industry to align with national frameworks.
“We appreciated the openness and rigor of the TIPES process,” says Fabian Diaz. “It wasn’t just about getting approval — it challenged us to think critically about our design, purpose, and application, ensuring PORTABOOM® was genuinely fit for purpose for the industry.”
Outstanding Results
What began as a safety-first innovation, has now become standard practice across temporary traffic management nationwide. Since achieving its initial TIPES certification, PORTABOOM® has grown from concept into a trusted frontline device - With over 4,000 units in operation across Australia.
This milestone is more than a commercial success; it reflects a genuine shift in how the industry approaches temporary traffic management — delivering measurable improvements in safety outcomes and significantly reducing risk exposure for both traffic controllers and the public.
Congratulations to the Traffic & Access Solutions team on their recent certification renewal and best wishes for the continued success of PORTABOOM® across Australia.
