Estimating the environmental impact of EV charging infrastructure

Electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure is a hot topic as the uptake of EVs grows. But what impact will the charging infrastructure for EVs have on the environment?

Transport sector greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are one of the largest sources of climate-change inducing pollution. In Australia, transport sector emissions account for about 18% of total emissions, and 37% at a global level.

The electrification of transport – the technological change replacing internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) with EVs – is a large part of the solution to decarbonising the sector.

However, until now, the lifecycle environmental impact of EV charging infrastructure has not yet been thoroughly examined. Understanding the lifecycle impacts of EV infrastructure options is vitally important for helping government policy and EV infrastructure providers deliver an optimal EV charging network with lowest overall lifecycle GHG emissions.

Researchers from the University of Melbourne in collaboration with the NTRO analysed the lifecycle impact of different EV chargers to provide insights into this issue.
