Dr Clarissa Han

Business Group Leader, Sustainability and Materials Performance

Dr Clarissa Han is the National Leader for Sustainability and Resilience Division in NTRO and leading the team in delivering high profile research on climate change adaptation, life cycle evaluation of transport options, recycled materials for road infrastructures and sustainable future mobility solutions. She also continues to be part of our Future Transport Systems Division in her capacity as Principal Professional Leader with 20+ years' engineering and research experience in traffic studies and analysis, congestion cost estimation, transport management and operations and emerging ITS technologies and tools. After joining NTRO in 2007, Clarissa has been the major contributor to various national guidelines, standards and specifications in network operations, traffic management and ITS evaluation and benchmarking.

Clarissa is currently leading the Australian national forum on 'Excessive congestion cost and travel time reliability cost'. Clarissa is also researching and delivering the Movement and Place Framework and impact assessment of emerging transport modes on community, society and environment. Clarissa is the Australian member of PIARC Mobility Strategic Theme TC2.4 Road Network Operations/ITS (2020-24). Commencing in 1996, Clarissa worked as a traffic engineer and subsequently as a project manager of integrated ITS projects. She successfully initiated traffic information services and on-board equipment for public users in China and directed design of the first two comprehensive traffic information platforms (Beijing and Guangzhou) in China. Clarissa delivered and monitored several cities' integrated traffic control centres.

Clarissa obtained her Bachelor's degree in IT engineering and a PhD in traffic engineering. Her doctoral thesis was on the topic of 'A study on an intelligent bus dispatching system mechanism' using data from a pioneering ITS project of the Beijing Public Transportation Company.
