Research has recently been conducted looking at the automation of Australasian level crossing field surveys to improve rail safety and decrease the risks they pose.
Due to the unique risks posed by railway level crossings, the likelihood and severity of accidents at these locations differ significantly from those at road intersections.
The Australian Level Crossing Assessment Model (ALCAM) is a tool used to assess level crossings however, the current process of this model is dependent on skilled inspectors.
The limited human resources availability and funding required to conduct inspections for more than 23,000 crossings has contributed to an extensive backlog of assessments. As a result, it is not easy to prioritise safety improvements and allocate funding effectively.
Technologies including satellite and aerial Images, visual sensors mounted on rail and road vehicles have been introduced into the research as an opportunity to integrate into the ALCAM process. A road map has also been recommended for increasing efficiency and providing practitioners with more accurate and current data on the condition and safety of level crossings.
Evidently, this improvement will significantly aid in managing the rail network, including better informing the prioritisation of limited funding and improving safety.
