Course Description

Austroads calls this the Mechanistic-Empirical Procedure (MEP), previously known as the General Mechanistic Procedure (GMP). This comprehensive approach combines theoretical mechanics with empirical observations to create robust pavement designs that meet modern infrastructure demands.

  • Trace how pavement design evolved from empirical charts to mechanistic–empirical methods
  • Show where CIRCLY fits into the Austroads framework and state supplements.
  • The user interface and main icons
  • How CIRCLY stores information using a relational database
  • Setting up jobs from existing components
  • Creating and modifying materials and layered systems
  • Using Austroads 2017 Pavement Design within CIRCLY
  • And navigating some of the graphics and result plots you’ll use every day.
  • Cost optimisation with parametric analysis
  • How to incorporate material costs and carbon factors
  • Managing and importing Traffic Load Distributions, or TLDs
  • Using mechanistic methods for lightly trafficked roads
  • A set of rehabilitation examples: foamed bitumen, lime-stabilised subgrades, cemented and modified granular layers, and asphalt inlays.
  • Airports – large commercial aircraft and military aircraft

Learning Outcomes

Across four modules, we’re going to take real-world constraints; traffic, materials, subgrade, and turn them into pavement designs you can defend, and you should anticipate approximately one and a half hours of your time to complete each module. You’ll see how CIRCLY converts those inputs into layer strains, stresses and Cumulative Damage Factors or “CDFs” - and how we use parametrics to make the trade-offs visible instead of debatable.
